The Manchester Youth Development Center (MYDC)
was founded in 1968 by a small group of concerned residents from the
Manchester community. First known as the Bidwell Education, Music
and Recreation Center, MYDC was formed with financial support of Pittsburgh
Presbytery and Bidwell Presbyterian Church, as well as other community
organizations and individuals.
MYDC developed as an outreach program of the church responding to
the expressed needs of the community. From its earliest days, education-primarily
reading and math have been and remain at the core of its mission.
Later, MYDC identified a need for a Charter School in the community.
The School was approved by the Pittsburgh Public Schools in the spring
of 1998 and the first class was enrolled in the fall of the same year.
While established as a separate organization, the Manchester Academic
Charter School (MACS) and MYDC are complimentary programs that work
collaboratively under one roof.
