5th Gala Award For Excellence in Government

The Manchester Youth Development Center Gala is held every other year and designed to be a reunion of old friends, alumni and cultivating new acquaintances who care about and contribute to helping the children in our community reach their fullest potential.

Valerie McDonald Roberts is Chief Urban Affairs Officer within the Office of Mayor William Peduto. She has served in elected and appointed public office for over 25 years, serving as elected Pittsburgh School Board Member and President, first African American woman elected to Pittsburgh City Council, and first African American in Allegheny County history to be elected county-wide to a row office, Recorder of Deeds. Valerie has served on over 25 non-profit boards, and has received over 30 awards for public service including Pittsburgh Business Times Women in Business, YWCA Tribute to Women, Carlow College Woman of Spirit, University of Pittsburgh Legacy Laureate, and New Pittsburgh Courier Woman of Excellence.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology and Master of Science in Forensic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, both Summa cum Laude. Valerie has served in Democratic Party endeavors on the local, state and national levels, including appointments to the Electoral College in 2008 for President Barack Obama, and in 1996 for President Bill Clinton.

She has been a children’s Christian educator for over 30 years. She is married to Theodore Roberts, has four adult children, a son-in-law, two nearly “daughter-in-laws”, and twelve grandchildren. She was a former regular TV panelist for WQED’s “4802” on Friday evenings for over 6 years.
